Stargazing in Auli: When and Where to Look Up

Auli's combination of altitude and distance from any real light pollution makes for some of the clearest night skies you'll find in Uttarakhand — and you don't need any special equipment to enjoy it.

Why Auli works so well for this

Sitting at around 9,000 ft in the Garhwal Himalayas, far from major towns and their light glow, Auli's night skies stay genuinely dark on clear nights. Combine that with typically low humidity and you get exceptional visibility — the kind of sky where the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on a good night.

Best time to go looking up

Winter (December–February) offers the clearest, driest air and the darkest skies — the trade-off is the cold, so dress for it properly if you're stepping outside after dark. Autumn (October–November) is a strong second choice: still clear, noticeably less bitter than peak winter.

Within any season, check the moon phase before you plan a dedicated stargazing night — a new moon (or a few days either side of it) gives you the darkest sky and the best view of fainter stars and the Milky Way. A bright full moon will wash out all but the brightest stars and planets.

Making the most of it

  • Give your eyes 15–20 minutes to adjust to the dark before judging how much you can actually see
  • A basic stargazing app can help identify constellations and planets in real time
  • If you're serious about astrophotography, a tripod and a camera capable of long exposures will do more for you here than almost anywhere else you'll travel to in North India
  • Layer up — even in shoulder season, temperatures drop fast after dark at this altitude

Where to do it

You don't need to go anywhere special — step outside on a clear night at WAMOS and look up. That's genuinely the whole plan. See what an evening here looks like · Check availability
