By air: the nearest airport

The nearest airport to Auli is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, roughly 280 km away. It has regular flights connecting to Delhi and a handful of other major cities. From Dehradun, you're looking at a full day's drive to Auli, so most guests either start early or break the journey overnight in Joshimath or Rudraprayag.

By rail: the nearest railway station

If you're travelling by train, Rishikesh and Haridwar railway stations are your best bet, both around 260 km from Auli. Rishikesh has better onward taxi availability given the steady flow of trekkers and pilgrims heading further into the hills.

The road route from Delhi, Dehradun & Rishikesh

From Delhi, the drive to Auli covers roughly 500 km via Rishikesh, Rudraprayag, and Joshimath — plan for 12–14 hours if driving straight through, though most travelers split it across two days.

From Dehradun and Rishikesh, the road runs through Devprayag, Srinagar (Uttarakhand), Rudraprayag, and Joshimath before the final climb into Auli. The road is well-travelled since it's also the route to Badrinath, but expect winding hill roads for the last few hours.

The last stretch — roughly 10 km up from Joshimath — is a scenic but steep uphill drive. It's the part of the journey where the mountains really announce themselves.

Cab vs. self-drive in hill terrain

If you're not used to driving on mountain roads — sharp hairpin bends, narrow single-lane stretches, and occasional landslide-clearing delays — hiring a local cab or driver is the easier option, especially outside of daylight hours. Self-driving is doable if you're experienced with hill roads and travelling in good weather, but always check road conditions for the Joshimath–Auli stretch before setting out, particularly in winter.
