Auli vs Gulmarg for Skiing: Which Should You Pick?
If you're deciding between India's two most talked-about ski destinations, here's an honest, no-agenda comparison.
The short answer
Gulmarg is India's most serious skiing destination — bigger terrain, a high-altitude gondola, and a genuine draw for intermediate-to-advanced skiers and backcountry riders. Auli is the more accessible, beginner-friendly option — shorter travel time from Delhi/NCR, a smaller and easier learning slope, and a quieter overall experience.
Neither is "better" outright — they suit different trips.
Season
Both run on a similar winter calendar. Gulmarg's ski season is generally December through March, with peak conditions from late January through late February. Auli's peak snow months are similarly December through February, with January and early February typically the most reliable for snow depth. If you're chasing a specific window, both destinations reward planning around late January/February rather than the very start or end of the season.
Terrain and difficulty
Gulmarg is known for serious vertical, a high-altitude gondola system, and terrain that appeals to experienced skiers and off-piste riders — it's regarded as one of the few places in India where skiing is a genuine mountain sport rather than a novelty activity. Auli's slopes are shorter and gentler, making it a considerably easier place to learn, and a more relaxed choice if skiing is one part of the trip rather than the entire point of it.
Access
This is where Auli has a real edge. It's reachable in a long day's drive from Dehradun or Rishikesh, both well connected to Delhi. Gulmarg, in Kashmir, typically requires a flight into Srinagar followed by a drive — more involved logistics, and worth checking current travel advisories for the region before booking.
Crowds and cost
Gulmarg draws a bigger international ski crowd and prices reflect that, especially in peak season. Auli tends to be quieter and more affordable, particularly outside the Christmas–New Year peak.
Our honest take
If skiing itself — real terrain, real vertical, a serious ski trip — is the goal, Gulmarg is worth the extra travel. If you want snow, a manageable learning slope, a shorter journey, and a quieter mountain weekend that doesn't revolve entirely around the sport, Auli — and a stay that lets you slow down around it — is the better fit.
